Sarah Khan

Graduate student in Computer Science at Georgia Tech, specializing in Computational Perception and Robotics. My research interests include robotics applications for TinyML and assistive technologies for support in domestic environments.

Academic Background

I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Comparative Literature from UCLA in 2007. After working professionally, I returned to academia at the beginning of 2022 to pursue Computer Science with an emphasis in Robotics.

Thus far I have been involved in a number or pursuits geared towards my core aspiration: to create robots that assist users in the home by taking on domestic labor and assistive tasks. I have studied Python and C++ focusing on embedded systems. Currently I am in the early stages of learning TinyML and quantum development on Qiskit (in addition to my graduate curriculum) hoping to integrate both with robotics. At Georgia Tech I have completed coursework and projects in Computer Vision, Human Robot Interaction, and Data-Centric Machine Learning. I studied Japanese up to a basic level of functional competancy for my undergraduate degree in Comparative Literature, and it is my hope that I can apply it in the robotics industry.

Professional Background

I worked in garment design for about 10 years and prior to that as a technical editor for supply chain quality control in the pharmaceutical and medical device fields. My reason for switching to Computer Science is a combination of life circumstances, but at the heart of it all is the desire to create with intellectual challenge. My extensive work experience brings an organized and efficient approach to project management, experienced team cultivation and leadership, and constructive communication skills. The fashion industry demands excellance combined with extreme turnaround timelines, and so I leverage the strategies and grit that I cultivated in my academic work.

Academic Initiatives

Code In Place

Since Spring 2024, I have been involved in Foothill College’s integration of Stanford’s online beginning CS learning platform and course into Foothill’s CS curriculum as CS49. I have been an ongoing Section Lead for CS49 and have developed Section Lead instructional aid materials. In Fall 2024 I presented on the Code in Place integration at the INSPIRE 2024 Conference with the Stanford Digital Education and Foothill Computer Science departments.

My continued involvement at Foothill and with Code in Place is due to the immense support I received from the Computer Science faculty at Foothill. I can firmly say that I would not have been able to overcome the steep initial learning curve I experienced learning programming without this support. Some of this faculty has continued to support me through my academic growth as mentors, helping guide and mold my goals. As a Section Lead, I hope to provide the same to incoming Computer Science majors.

Research

At Georgia Tech, I volunteer at LIDAR (Laboratory for Intelligent Decision and Autonomous Robots) on a team supporting Reinforcement Learning research on the Digit humanoid robot; my sub-division’s task is integrating TorchRL into the IsaacLab training environment.

Extracurricular Involvement

Competitive Underwater Robotics

From 2023 to 2024 I was involved in a local robotics team in an effort to get experience designing and deploying an embedded system. The team competed in the 2024 MATE ROV Competition. I was the Lead Software Designer on the team, managing the software team’s workload and task assignment. Community Involvement

Study Quest // Mentoring

Many people have asked me how I managed to go from a literary academic background and a professional design background into Computer Science. The reality behind this shift is fairly unglamorous as I simply combined the extreme efficiency ethos that I honed in the fashion industry with very focused, outcome oriented hard work. I was faced with revisiting STEM topics, such as higher level mathematics, after 15 years and so I enrolled in an online learning program to relearn how to learn. Study Quest is a learning course with a community geared towards teaching students how to learn efficiently, effectively and with depth. Because of this course and my implementation of its curriculum, I was able to exceed my previous undergraduate performance, while simultaneously juggling more extracurricular activities. Once I completed the course and saw the results, I continued to participate in its online community as a mentor to support other students in achieving their academic goals.

Civil Rights // Caste Equality

I’ve done a bit of work with and through Equality Labs, a civil rights group advocating for Dalit and caste equality. I volunteered as a Book Ambassador for Thenmozhi Soundarajan’s book release, “The Trauma of Caste”. I also supported standup comedian Manjeet Sarkar’s tour with marketing and promotional graphics. The tour entitled “Untouchables”, leveraged the expanding standup comedy platform in India to raise awareness on caste, gender, and marginalized community discrimination.
